blog post #9!
When COVID-19 struck, I was a sophomore in high school. All in all, though the school year was cut short by Zoom calls mid-March, it wasn't that bad. I spent a lot of time at home doing trends on TikTok, and though I definitely think that it hindered my learning, there weren't many remote resources at the time that would be nearly prepared for something like that. However, I do think that that contributed to a lot of individuals my age having lacking social skills or educational foundations that were learned at those pivotal ages that were stunted by being at home, as it was far too easy to cheat on assignments and slack off when you didn't have any real repercussions. When you were learning at home, it didn't actually feel like school, which was why it was kind of harmful in some aspects. Something that you can definitely do as a remote teacher is have breakout rooms and group activities frequently, as lecturing on and on can be an easy habit in a Zoom call.
OER (Open Educational Resource)s are incredibly useful within the classroom. An Open Educational Resource is a tool, template or article that can be utilized within the classroom for learning. The term open relates to the idea that anyone can use it, meaning that it's often within the terms of fair use. One OER that I think is incredibly useful is The New Oxford Shakespeare, which is an online database with every Shakespeare work that has been published. I think that this is especially useful, as I utilized this resource throughout the entirety of high school---from English class to theatre electives.
I think that the skills that I learned from Assignment 4 definitely carried me the furthest so far when it comes to skills that I think I'll utilize in the classroom. Making a PowerPoint is one of the biggest foundations when it comes to education in the modern age, especially with SmartBoards replacing whiteboards or chalkboards in the even further past. I think that I could improve with how to do technical things, like inserting videos in the PowerPoint or things that are more complicated than that. When it comes to technical format, I sometimes get a little overwhelmed, but as I went through the rubric on the assignment and followed the links and videos there, it definitely helped me a lot. So far, I would say that this assignment has taught me the most out of all of them.
